Subsidy for the rehabilitation of rural homes in Extremadura: a complete guide to take advantage of it and improve accessibility in your home

The new subsidy for the rehabilitation of rural homes in Extremadura is an opportunity to improve your property with significant financial support. If your home is located in a municipality with 10,000 inhabitants or fewer, you may qualify for grants covering everything from accessibility improvements to energy efficiency upgrades.

1. What is the rural housing rehabilitation subsidy in Extremadura?

This grant is designed to finance improvement works in homes located in small municipalities across Extremadura. Its objective is to modernize properties through conservation work, accessibility improvements, energy efficiency upgrades, and interior adaptations. It also covers the adaptation of buildings to residential use, provided they later obtain a certificate of habitability.

2. Who can apply?

  • Individuals who are full owners (100 percent ownership) of the property or hold lifetime usufruct rights.
  • Residents in municipalities with up to 10,000 inhabitants.
  • Applicants who have not started the renovation works before submitting the application.

Priority applicants according to the following order:

  1. Young people who have not previously received housing subsidies.
  2. Applicants with incomes equal to or below 2.5 times the IPREM.
  3. Applicants with incomes between 2.5 and 4 times the IPREM.
  4. All other applicants.

This priority system directly affects the chances of approval, so submitting the application as early as possible is strongly recommended.

3. Eligible renovation works

  • Structural improvements: foundations, roofs, and façades.
  • Basic installations: repair or replacement of electrical systems, plumbing, and sanitation.
  • Interior adaptation: to ensure safety, hygiene, and habitability conditions.
  • Energy efficiency: insulation, carpentry, and climate control systems.
  • Accessibility: installation of elevators, lifting platforms, or removal of architectural barriers.
  • Change of use: adapting buildings for residential use in order to obtain a habitability certificate.

Accessibility improvements are particularly relevant for older homes in rural areas, where mobility challenges are more common.

4. How much funding does the subsidy cover?

  • The subsidy covers 50 percent of the eligible budget.
  • It may reach up to 70 percent if the applicant is young, a large family, a single-parent family, or lives with a specially protected person.
  • Maximum limit: €14,000 for single-family homes.
  • Maximum limit: €9,000 for homes within multi-family buildings.

5. Essential requirements to apply

  • Be of legal age and hold Spanish or EU nationality, or legal residency.
  • Be up to date with tax and Social Security obligations.
  • Provide technical documentation: project or technical report, photos of the current condition, and energy certificates (if applicable).

6. Application deadlines

The application period runs from March 1 to June 1, 2026. The earlier the application is submitted, the higher the chance of being placed in the top priority levels.
